Learn or Die?
While I take great pride in my work, I also carry a deep sense of reflection—every client interaction is an opportunity to ask myself: What could I have done better? Where did I fall short? Rather than dwelling on regret, I see these reflections as fuel for growth. Learning is my antidote to self-criticism, reframing my missteps as motivation for further evolution.
Change Begins With An Ending
No matter how much experience I gain, I must stay humble, cultivate a beginner’s mind, and ask myself: How can I be of greater value? What do other consultants and coaches do well that I can learn from? For me, learning something new often requires unlearning something I “know”—identifying old patterns I can break, or at least better control, so I can create more flow and ease in my work and life.
One powerful example of this: In 2024, I earned my ACC certification with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). When I shared this with a colleague, they were surprised: “I thought you didn’t believe in certifications?” Fair point. Like many who began coaching organically—long before ICF or any formal accreditations existed— I thrived without formal accreditation. I was always learning, building strong client relationships, and collaborating with top-tier coaches. I never felt I needed a credential.
Thank You ICF
Certifications aren’t for everyone—but for me, this journey was eye-opening. After 25+ years, hundreds of clients, and thousands of hours of coaching (yes, you must count your hours for certification!), I choose to immerse myself in the “ICF way.” I learned a lot, and emerged with a new respect for the rigor and dedication of the ICF professionals who are shaping coaching as a true craft—one that consistently benefits both clients and practitioners. More than a title, certification is a commitment to professional excellence.
And since I’m putting this out there—I’ll share my next goal: PCC certification in 2025.
Learn or die? I don’t know. But I will say—after spending so much time focused on others—it was incredibly fulfilling to invest in my own growth for a change.
